Garmin Tread® products and tablet devices like them overheat in direct sunlight. When they're mounted to a windshield, these navigators run a-ok when the AC is blowing. What happens when the device is on and the truck is turned off? No AC? Hot day in Baja? Through the windshield, the sunlight bakes these electronics like an oven.
When the units overheat, they’ll turn off. Sometimes, they even master reset in the process. A master reset removes all saved data on your Tread device, including the precious birdseye imagery. The white heat shields give the unit some shade, about a 8-15 F (4-8C) cooler when the windshield is in direct sunlight. We haven’t tested the gray or black ones, but customers have requested differing colors.
What is the heat shield made out of? All weather grade PETG-HF or Carbon Fiber reinforced ASA. This mounts to your Magnetic Base.
the PETG-HF (White or other colors), shipped in QTY of 2. It has a maximum operating temperature of 158F (70C), which is much higher than the electronic unit it’s protecting. Cars can get hotter than that, and if the PETG severely warps, get the Tread unit out of direct sunlight. Therefore, we ship these in QTY’s of 2.
the ASA-CF (Black only), shipped in QTY of 2. It has a maximum operating temperature of 230F (110), which is much higher than the electronic unit it’s protecting. The ASA-CF will last longer than the PETG in hot environments, and it is more durable and impact resistant.
Warranty? Limited lifetime warranty. It is limited to the heat shield only. The heat shield is a consumable. It is your ultimate responsibility and liability to protect and use your device in a manner which meets local laws, safety and trail etiquette. If you break or damage your heat shield, we will send one replacement at no additional cost.
